We approched the entrance of an elevator that would take the ship down 370 feet to the other side of the dam.114 viewsThere are two sets of locks, for much bigger ships, one for each direction. There are five locks in each set. It takes about 4 hours to past these locks. The lift would only take about 40 minutes. The caisson (or chamber) is about 390’ by 60’ wide by 12’ deep. The elevator lifts both the ship and the water it floats on some 370 feet. It can carry about 7 million pounds, including ship and water.

We took a boat ride in the Aberdeen harbor, where it used to have many house boats. Now, the government has relocated many of them to government housing. The floating restaurants are still there including the largest in the world, the Jumble Restaurant.114 views
